Are you going to San Francisco? (Sorry, it’s hard not to invoke the song.) If so, you’ve got great timing: You’ll find plenty of must-see gallery shows up at the moment, so let’s dive in and see what’s at the top of our lists.

The city is awash with great painting! You’ll probably want to prioritize Berggruen Gallery, where two excellent solo shows are coming to a close this Saturday. The painter Shara Hughes, who was featured in last year’s Whitney Biennale, presents colorful new landscapes in “Sticks and Stones,” while rising star Minku Kim focuses on wryly clever geometric abstraction in “Straight Edge”—a double-entendre referencing both the painting technique and punk rock subculture of the same name. Another unmissable show can be found at Crown Point Press, where selection of Patricia Treib prints are on display alongside monochrome works from the press’ archive. Treib’s approach to brushy, airy painting is utterly unique, and it’s interesting to see how well it translates to printmaking. Finally, as a sucker for great titles, I’m intrigued by the upcoming exhibition opening at Hosfelt Gallery on June 23: “Frankenstein’s Birthday Party” is a group show spotlighting artists whose work examines the human body and our attempts to conquer death, especially through technology. A worthwhile topic of discussion if I ever heard one.
