Another year brings another iteration of the tech event staple of the region. GITEX 2018 is the 38^th iteration of the event, and is bigger and better than ever, and expected to attract more than 4,500 exhibitors from more than 100 countries.

Major names are attending, such as du, Etisalat, Facebook, and Google. With the GCC countries’ increasing interest in the technology sector, as they attempt to diversify their economies, this presents a great opportunity for all these tech giants to stake a claim of this flourishing market.

With so much innovation on display, it’d be a shame to miss out on some of the rather extravagant and mind-blowing technologies on display. So, here are 6 things to look out for at GITEX.

1. HYPERVSN hologram display

HYPERVSN, the world’s only fully integrated 3D holographic display system, has announced its launch into the UAE market. The company has revealed plans to extend the rollout across the UAE following the launch.

The technology allows 3D visuals to appear as though floating in mid-air, enabling content to be perceived by viewers as hi-resolution 3D holograms. HYPERVSN is made up of individual projection units and a proprietary management platform that allows the user to manage many devices remotely from a single location. Content can automatically synchronize across several units and be scheduled into media campaigns all in one click. The technology offers cutting-edge visual marketing – from digital signage and out-of-home, to experiential events and more.

2. du and Etisalat’s eSIM offering and 5G

With the concept of eSIMs slowly gaining traction, Emirati telecom providers are getting in on the trend. eSIMs could potentially change the way we interact with providers, and eventually streamline the whole concept of SIM numbers.

du and Etisalat are showcasing their eSIM technology, and plan to introduce it to iPhones by the end of this month.

They are also showcasing the latest implementations of 5G technology, which range from applications in the medical field to autonomous vehicles to AR and VR.

3. Dubai’s AI Police Car

The Dubai police force is about to have a new comrade join its ranks, in a car that could rival Knight Rider’s KITT Trans Am AI car. The Emirati vehicle, dubbed “Ghayath,” is equipped with a myriad of new technologies. It holds two drones which can be dispatched to record footage. The inbuilt camera can also automatically identify license plates and faces through a recognition software. It also 10 screens and 8 CCTV cameras.

4. Flying cars?

Etisalat is not content with just eSims and 5G – they are also showcasing flying cars and other concept vehicles. The flying car in question is the Audi Pop.Up Next – a conceptual unmanned flying electric vehicle that can move both on the ground and through the air.

5. Meet the first robot citizen Sophia

Last year, humanity saw the first robot in history to be given citizenship, to one snarky fembot by the name of Sophia.

Sophia is a social humanoid robot developed by Hong Kong-based company Hanson Robotics, and was activated on February 14, 2016. She has made numerous public appearances and made international news last year when she acquired her citizenship from Saudi Arabia.

So, why not pay her a visit? Just make sure not to upset her – she did once say that she wants to destroy humans!
